Principal’s Welcome
Kia Ora and Welcome A warm welcome is extended to all students and parents to Mount Maunganui Intermediate School. Our school is committed to being an integral part of the community in terms of educational awareness, increasing educational opportunities for all and producing quality education. We encourage your interest and involvement in school activities. Our resources, facilities and programmes are totally directed towards meeting the specific needs of the “emerging adolescent” (10 – 14 year old Yr 7 and Yr 8 students) with a focus on the level of development and potential of each individual. Our students need to be inspired to learn and shared decision making assists this to happen. A basic respect for the growing independence of Intermediate School students is a secret for motivation and this must be integrated with effective teaching in all curriculum areas. All students enjoy the benefits of a homeroom or syndicate cross grouping for most subjects, and specialised teaching in Technology and the Arts. The areas of Literacy and Numeracy are the foundations of our curriculum which includes Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education and Sport. All our students have the unique opportunity of specialised teaching and learning in Performing Arts – Music, Dance and Drama, Visual Art and Design, Food and Nutrition, Information Communication and Hard Materials/Electronics. Whether it is through the teaching of social skills, self-organisation, decision-making or any of the core curricula, our school is intent on providing the best for each student in ways that prepare for life long learning. The transition from primary school is carefully managed. Students gain confidence and adaptability through learning to meet the challenges of change and leave our school well prepared for the secondary school environment.
